On this page you will find all the information you need about the upcoming Summer School, which will be taking place from 14 to 27 August 2023 in Almaty (Kazakhstan).

General information

This year the Summer School will take place August 14-27, 2023, in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan. The Summer School program includes a minimum of 4,5 hours of classes each day from Monday till Saturday. In addition, there will be excursions and meetings with managers in the field of sports. Besides the specialized part of the Summer School several events will take place, which aim to acquaint the participants with the culture and history of Germany. An internal area of the website that holds all the studying materials has been set up for the participants of the Summer School 2023. It can be accessed here. Login data will be provided at the beginning of the Summer School.

All the lectures, classes and events are held in English. Participation in the Summer School is free of charge.

At the end of the Summer School, each participant receives a certificate of completion (4 ECTS). The most important thing though, is that you acquire valuable knowledge in the field of sports economics as well as sports management and marketing.

Expenses

  • Participation in the program is free of charge. The rest of the costs are at the students' own expense.
  • Summer School participants are responsible for their own travel expenses. They must also pay for their accomodation and meals for the duration of the program.
  • Participants from other cities or countries can be accommodated in one of the student dormitories at Al-Farabi Kazakh National UniversityExternal link (10,000 tenge per night, room for 3 people, toilet and shower in room). All accommodations are located in close proximity to the academic buildings where the Summer School will be held. If you need accommodation, please mention it in the application form.

Requirements

The number of places for admission to the course is limited to 30 participants. The selection is made on a competitive basis.

  • The course is designed for students, undergraduate and postgraduate students of economic and management specialties, as well as sports sciences from Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries
  • Applicants must have completed at least one semester at the university, be able to demonstrate good knowledge of English (at least at the B2 level) and be interested in the topic of the Summer School.

Application 

To apply, you must complete an online application form (available here) and attach the following documents:

  • proof of student status (e.g. student card, certificate of enrollment)
  • curriculum vitae (in Russian or English)
  • letter of motivation (in Russian or English)
  • proof of English language skills (at least B2)

CV should provide a brief overview of the candidate for the Summer School. In your motivation letter you should describe why you want to participate in the Summer School and what results you expect from participation.

Lecturers

The lecturers at the Summer School are leading experts from the fields of sports management and sports economics — employees of the German universities.

  • Prof. Dr Frank Daumann (Friedrich Schiller University Jena)

    Frank Daumann (born 1964) is head of the Institute for Sports Science, holds the chair for Sports Economics and Health Economics, is the scientific director of the MBA programme in Sports Management and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. After completing his studies in 1990, he did his doctorate at the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Bayreuth and habilitated there in 1998. Frank Daumann’s scientific work has been awarded several prizes and scholarships. His research focuses on sports and health economics. In the field of sports economics, Frank Daumann particularly deals with the analysis of individual sports markets, quality management in sports organisations, questions of doping and the marketing of sports. His textbook 'Fundamentals of Sports Economics' is a standard work for university teaching in the field of sports and has been revised and published in multiple editions.

    Frank Daumann is a member of the American Economic Association, the Association for Social Policy, the Walter Eucken Institute e. V. and the working group Sports Economics e. V. He also works as a reviewer in specialist journals such as 'The European Journal of Sport Science', 'The European Journal of Health Economics' and the 'German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research'. He is co-editor of the peer-reviewed magazines 'Sport und Gesellschaft' and 'Sciamus - Sport und Management'.

    Frank Daumann regularly presents his research results at international conferences (e.g. in Paris, Birmingham, Manchester, New Orleans, Auburn). He has also gained international experience during several research stays abroad (e.g. at Indiana University in Bloomington (USA), at the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn (USA)). He has been an Associate Scholar at the Mises Institute since 2013.  In addition, several international educational projects funded by the DAAD took place under his leadership (various summer schools in Russia, professional alumni special project for MEDICA 2016, 2018)

  • Dr. Norbert Schütte (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz)

    Norbert Schütte (born 1963) is a research assistant at the Institute for Sports Science in the Department of Sports Economics, Sports Sociology and Sports History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

    He studied sociology, economics, social and economic history and computer science at the University of Hamburg. He did his doctorate at the German Sports University Cologne on the subject of ‘Pressure to professionalisation and obstacles of the management of sports clubs and associations". From 1995 to 2003 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sports Economics and Sports Management at the German Sport University Cologne. From 2004 to 2005 he carried out various studies as an employee of the General German University Sports Association (adh), including the evaluation of the elite sport funding ‘partner university of elite sport", a structural analysis of Olympic teams and a satisfaction analysis of the members. Since April 2006 he has been working at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as a research assistant. The focus of his work is the implementation of empirical research projects on sociological, business and economic topics as well as comprehensive teaching. In teaching and research, in particular, he dealt with cost-benefit analyses of major sporting events, professional field analyses of sports managers, professionalisation tendencies in the third sector, management of non-profit organisations, effects of new public management as well as human resource management and management techniques. In addition, since 2010 he has been organising the annual Innsbruck Sports Economics and Management Symposium with Prof. Holger Preuß and Prof. Martin Schnitzer.

  • Prof. Dr Markus Breuer (SRH Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences)

    Markus Breuer (born 1981) studied business administration, economics and international tax law at the universities of Braunschweig, Chemnitz and Hamburg. In 2011, he earned his PhD at the Department of Sports and Health Economics at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He has held different positions there since 2015, including head of master's programmes „Sportmanagement (M.A.)“ and „International Management and Leadership (M.A.)“. Since 2020, Markus Breuer is the vice-rector of Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences.

    Breuer’s main areas of expertise are governance and economics of professional sport. Breuer publishes the results of his research in German and English and also presents them at different national and international conferences. Since 2017, he has also been head of the national working group ‘Arbeitskreis Sportökonomie e.V.’, which promotes scientific exchange between researchers and academics from universities as well as practitioners on issues and topics in sports economics. In addition, he serves on the review board of "Sciamus Sport und Management", and is also a reviewer for the German Science and Humanities Council. In 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, he participated in the DAAD-sponsored summer schools in Russia as a lecturer in sports management.

  • Prof. Dr Benedikt Römmelt (SRH University Heidelberg)

    Prof. Dr Benedikt Römmelt (born 1980) studied sports economics (diploma) at the University of Bayreuth and sports management (master) at the Université Montpellier. He received his doctorate from the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Jena. He gained practical experience in sponsoring and event management at Gerolsteiner Brunnen (cycling), in media analysis at IFM International, in consulting at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, in (service) market research (senior consultant IMK) and education (managing director Sciamus GmbH). In 2016 he was appointed professor for sports marketing and methods at the Faculty of Economics at the SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg. Since 2022, he has been a professor at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt in marketing research and statistics.

    Benedikt Römmelt's research fields include digitisation in marketing, social media marketing, brand management and leadership. Benedikt Römmelt is a member of the working group Sports Economics e. V. He is also active as a reviewer for the ‘German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research’ and on the Science Council (accreditation). He is co-editor of the peer-reviewed 'Sciamus - Sport und Management'.
